THE YEAR I DIDN'T WRITE ABOUT

Last year was a very busy year, paticularly after June.  And there were a lot of blog posts that were drafted in my mind but that never actually got written.  There were also some unexpected obstacles to writing.

So I thought I would do a quick overview of some of the doll and doll-related things that happened last year:

In June I met Barbie.

A shopping centre (shopping mall) near us was extended and refurbished.  The new shops that opened included a Big W store and meeting Barbie there was one of the attractions of their 'Grand Opening'.  The unfortunate thing was that the 'Grand Opening' was on a Wednesday and she was there between 1pm and 3pm when all her fans were at school. But she really was lovely (and had a very faint American accent).

At the end of July, Ikea did release their Huset doll furniture set in Australia so I gave in to peer pressure and bought one.  (And it was only $2 dearer than the American price, yay for Ikea ).

In August, I decided that if I was going to sew for American Girl dolls, I really needed an American Girl doll to make sure the clothes fitted properly.  So Megan came to live in Australia. (you will meet her properly in another blog post).

And, finally, having been taught by you all to always keep my eyes open for doll stuff in unexpected places, I found these little keyrings in Riot which is an art and craft chain here in Australia.  They contain tiny crayons in seven different colours.

They are almost perfect scale for Barbie and were only $2.

Do you like the top Barbie is wearing in this picture?  It is one of three easy tops I promised to blog about last year.  It is very easy to make and the only sewing required is for the press stud (which you don't have to have).   Now I just have to write out the instructions so they are not too confusing.

  1. Poor giant Barbie, to have to work when the kids weren't there :-). The little crayons are a good find, I'm still looking for miniature paint tubes myself. Barbie looks cute in her top!

    1. It was a pity as she was just standing there for a lot of the time on her own, very bad planning on the part of the executives who organised it. I was really pleased with the crayons and paint tubes would be great. I hope you can find some.

  2. That first photo is hysterical and that live Barbie does not look quite like I would expect a real Barbie to look. Maybe I would be expecting more boobies. But you cant go wrong with a tiara.

Love those crayons. Did the top to they key ring just twist off so you can put whatever you want in the canister?

    Very nice blouse!

    1. Thanks, Muff. The cat was very sneaky and got on and settled when I wasn't around so she ended up sleeping there for quite a while. As for Barbie, yes you can't go wrong with a tiara and pink ruffles.
Yes, the top of the key ring twists off so you can use it as a canister as well as keeping the crayons in there.

  3. Hello from Spain: welcome to your blog. The first picture with your cat on the computer is very cool. I see that Barbie was in the mall when the kids were at school. Poor organization. I love the American doll. I do not have any in my collection. I'm looking forward to seeing your sew dresses for her. I also have Ikea furniture. In my country are also more expensive than in America. Keep in touch.

    1. Hi Marta. Yes, my cat slept there for quite a few hours but after that we stopped her from doing it again because it's not very good for the computer. I am sewing jeans for my American Girl at the moment so you will see them soon. Yes, everything is always cheaper in America it seems.

    1. It was interesting - when she had her picture taken she always had the same pose and smile. I wonder if she had to go to Barbie School to learn those skills. The blouse is one of those simple designs that is really easy to make but more difficult to explain in words but I'm working on it.

  5. Yay, Happy New Year, Carrickters! I mean, here on your blog. Good to read you again.

I, too, love that cat-on-a-computer photo. If I didn't usually have my keyboard in my lap, our Louie (tom cat) would sit on it to keep me from being on it, lol.

Congratulations on getting the IKEA furniture. I still don't have a set, but this past year was not one when I've done lots of buying. Shrug. Maybe this year?

I look forward to seeing your new/reserved posts ;-)

    Best blogging wishes!

    1. Thanks, D7ana. Skittle (our cat) usually sits on my lap for a while and then gets up and slides behind me and pushes me onto the edge of the chair but like all cats, she changes her mind every so often and this time decided on the keyboard was where she wanted to be.
As for the Ikea furniture, I'm sure it will be around for quite a while. You'll have lots of time.

  7. Happy 2014! I'm like that. Have lots of things to post and write but just never get around to it and when you starting reading everyone's blog, you are just out of time to write your own. I love the miniature crayons!

And I love the Barbie from Big W! Her outfit looks exactly like the one of the playset dolls that are being release in stores at the moment!

    1. HiChampagne Barbie, Sorry for not responding earlier but for some reason Blogger didn't notify me. Yes, it's hard sometimes to get time for all the blog stuff but the main thing I think is it should be fun and not a chore.
As for Barbie, I'll have to have a look, I haven't noticed that outfit yet.

  11. I had to smile--that is how I talked myself into most of my dolls--needing a model to sew for--I can't wait to see what you make for your American Girl!--Thanks for the mention above too :)

  12. I am really bad at sewing,my only encounter with the craft was when I had to sew a certain items in school which was compulsory as you can guess by now! :D
But I really wish I had a flair for sewing especially when the Barbie clothes are getting so expensive with every passing day! :(
